How To Build Strong Willpower to Achieve Everything You Want
Don’t you all want to achieve your goals? It could be losing weight for me or studying 3 extra hours for you. But let’s accept it that no matter what we want to achieve, procrastination takes the lead. And that is why even after wanting those 6 packs desperately, I don’t go to gym and you don’t study for your exams to score good marks. Well, let’s dig deeper into why procrastination wins and how you can achieve everything you want by building willpower.
One of the key reasons why people procrastinate over their goals is because they don’t have control over their desires, like watching Netflix, surfing the internet or simply lying down on the bed. The harsh truth is no one wants to procrastinate and people hate it when they end up wasting their time on Netflix or any other meaningless activity. The reason behind this is quite simple and that is when you choose Netflix over reading, you enjoy it. It’s like an instant gratification that makes you feel good but at the end of the day/month/year, you regret wasting your time. You regret why the hell you didn’t get out of the bed to hit the gym.
The problem is not merely procrastination, the problem is that you don’t have control over yourself. It’s not bad to watch Netflix or use Instagram. However, it is dangerous when you are not able to close these applications to work. When you are not able to control your mind to delay these instant gratifications or when you are not able to take actions on what you want to do.
All in all, you need to understand how to control yourself and that’s where WILLPOWER comes.
Willpower: Your willpower is your ability to control or restrain yourself, and the ability to resist instant gratification in order to achieve long-term goals.
How To Build Strong WILLPOWER to Achieve Everything You Want: -
From waking up in the morning to going to college/office, there are so many tasks in your day that you don’t want to do but you have to because they are good for your future. For example: No one likes to go to the gym but everyone wants to have a great body shape and healthy lifestyle. Hence, some people push themselves to hit the gym while others keep delaying it for tomorrow. I am going to tell you how you can build willpower to do the tasks that are not as pleasing as watching reels on Instagram.
Steps to build Willpower: -
1. Complete what you start:- Most of the time, people jump on a task because they are filled with motivation but as soon as the dose of motivation evaporates from their brain, they leave the task in between. Sometimes they make excuses like, “I at least tried”, “It was too tough” and what not. I am sure you can relate. But do you know why is it so wrong to leave a task in between?
Let me tell you. You started working because you think you can, you left it without completing it because now you think you can’t or you don’t want to. If observe it, you will realise that you are a slave of your mind. Your mind said “start”, you started. Your mind said “quiet”, you quit. In order to gain control over your brain, you must complete what you start. Because if you are not quitting even when your brain says, “I don’t want to do it”, you push your brain to expand.
When you complete what you start, you gain control over your brain, you become the master. Having said that, you must practice this exercise in every task that you do in your whole day. For example: You sleep daily, right? Now after waking up, you have to complete the process of sleeping by making your bed. When you make your bed after waking up, you complete the first task of your day.
2. Do better than you think you can: Before starting our work, we all have pre-determined boundaries in our mind. Somewhere in your brain, you have decided on what’s your limit. Typically, you start a task, you do it as well as you can and then you are done, right? This is exactly what you should not do.
The same formula applies here, your brain plays with you by setting boundaries in every way possible. People who break those boundaries are the ones who can do even the most monotonous task easily. Hence, whatever you do, you have to do it better than you think you can. When you try to do even 1% better than you think you can, you push your brain to break the boundaries and let your best come out of the shell. You unlock the real power of your brain and you can actually realize what you are capable of.
3. Do more than you think you can: Our brain always wants to do less work; it finds different ways to avoid the difficult task and that’s when it traps you to watch Netflix (watching Netflix doesn’t take any effort). Dandapani says, in order to gain willpower, you have to do more than you think you can. Because when your brain thinks “Ohh, yeah we get to rest now”, you send it a message that “we are not done yet.” This activity helps your brain to expand by breaking the bar of laziness and rising to the bar of hard work.
For example: Just as I told you to make your bed in the morning, try to do more than that. You can either make your parent’s bed too or you can clean the floor of your room. This way you make yourself do what your brain wasn’t prepared or willing to do.
All these three steps of gaining willpower are designed to gain control over your mind, resist instant gratification and push your limits. I am applying these three steps in my life from the past few days and believe me the results are visible to me. I am now no longer addicted to Netflix; I am not a slave of my mind. In fact, now my mind does what is important rather than what is pleasing.
I hope you apply these three step simple formulas in your life, build Willpower and become successful eventually.
