I Took One Challenge For 24 Hours & It Is Changing My Life In Unexpected Ways
I have read more than 200 books in the past 2 years and voila! I don’t remember everything that I read in those books. Looking at my bookshelf makes me wonder ‘Did I waste my time if I don’t remember what I read?’
Well, the answer was Yes and No.
Allow me to explain.
So, I have read mostly self-help books and as per the unsaid rule, Self-help books should be read if you want to HELP yourself, not just read, and forget all those giant advice or techniques or hacks that a typical self-help book shares.
In my case, I realized that self-help books are not about remembering what you read because OMG! You can find life-changing advice anywhere on YouTube/ Medium/Instagram/Twitter or platforms like these.
Self-help books or the self-improvement content that you read, listen or watch is about IMPLEMENTATION. If you don’t implement what you consume then you are just creating a dead hole for yourself.
Not knowing what you need to do to change your life is one thing. But knowing what you need to do yet not DOING anything to actually transform your life is pathetic. It creates a negative image in your mind about yourself. Your brain or should I say your deeper inner self makes a belief that ‘you don’t want to change your life or that you don’t care about yourself enough to do something to change your life’
And then no matter how many videos you watch on self-love, you cannot change this negative self-image. I am speaking from my personal observation. I have everything in my life, be it a good family or financial independence. Everything is sorted yet I used to feel a void in me. I am loved on every platform but I still speak negatively about myself at times.
Because I was reading books on fitness but I still stuff myself with burgers/pizza and oh god, fries are love.
I read books like Rich Dad Poor Dad and The Psychology of Money but I was not investing my money.
In short, I knew things needed to be changed, I knew how to change but I was not doing anything to change them.
And that’s when I introduced the philosophy of taking challenges whenever I read something that I REALLY think can transform my life.
One such challenge was to DON’T SPEAK ANYTHING NEGATIVE FOR 24 HOURS.
Now, I know this may sound too simple to you but let me give you a reality check.
After reading books like Shrimad Bhagwat Geeta and The Power of Now, I thought I had attained heaven in my mind. These books explain ‘how we are beyond our mind and thinking’ and how we can make our world a fairy tale through positive thinking. And I know you are way more familiar with this concept called ‘the power of positive thinking’, ain’t you?
Yet, every single day, you and I speak so negatively about ourselves and others without our conscious knowledge. We think we know everything about positive thinking, the power of thoughts, and powerful affirmations yet we never give a second thought about the words or rather language we use in our day-to-day life.
Negative thoughts slide into your mind without your permission, without your realization, and then one negative thought compounds and pollutes your entire brain to KEEP STRESSING about the things you have no control over.
Besides, these negative thoughts turn into words and you start speaking negatively about yourself and others in no time.
For example; Everyone wants the best for themselves. No one wants problems or stress in their lives. But if you take a pause and examine your words, you will realize how often you speak negatively about yourself, your dreams, and your capabilities. You want money but you say ‘I am poor’ You want to be happy but you say ‘my life sucks’
Are you really that innocent or have you lost control over the words you use in your day-to-day life? Yes, it is time when you start asking questions to yourself.
You need to understand this today that ‘your words have a powerful frequency behind them. They carry an energy that can alter your reality’
After realizing how my words are creating my reality (which was not so dreamy), I took the challenge of not speaking anything negative for 24 hours, and here is what I found;
1. More Conscious; Getting My Power Back:
I don’t know about you but unknowingly, I often say things that I don’t even believe in.
For example; I started my YouTube channel recently. I started writing on Medium almost 8.5 months back and my initial articles were just for me, no one read them. But that didn’t shake my confidence. I kept writing and here I am today. I had prepared myself for YouTube too and I knew that the initial videos will be just for me. Yet, when I see my videos not getting enough reach, I sometimes say, ‘maybe I am not good enough for YouTube’
And this goes in all areas of my life. Recently, I completed two projects with my clients, meaning the work is done. And now, I am again looking for writing projects. But before I get the project, I find myself saying at least once a day that ‘what if I don’t get any writing projects?’
The reason why I am telling you about my life is for you to understand WHY we speak negatively or rather against what we want. Our mind is always stressing over little things. If you plant one little seed of doubt, your brain will create a whole garden of negativity.
When I did this challenge, I was more conscious of every word that I spoke. In fact, whenever a negative thought came to my mind, instead of keeping thinking about it, I laughed and said ‘Really? I think of all these negative things.
I laughed every time a pure negative thought came to my mind to make my mind realize that ‘Dude, I am not in a mood’
Just 24 hours of not speaking anything negative made me realize how often I think negatively and honestly, how easy it is to ignore negativity if only we are more CONSCIOUS about what we think.
2. Less Stressed; More Blessed:
I have read tons of books on mindset, positivity, and manifestation yet negative thoughts found their way back to my mind. I know how my life can change if I think positively and if I can become conscious. All in all, I have all the ‘Gyan’ that one needs to change life yet I was big on negativity because duh!
You cannot expect your life to change just because you consume ‘healthy content’
You have to become a listener of your soul. You have to examine what goes in your mind. Scientists say that we consume 99.9% of the information subconsciously. This means even you don’t know what goes in your brain most of the time.
When I took on this challenge, I found myself repetitively taking active participation in whatever I consumed and whatever I was thinking. I was not JUST LOST in my head. I was alive at the moment. Hence, not even a single stressful thought could survive in my mind. I am not saying negative thoughts didn’t come. But when I didn’t allow those negative thoughts to grow, they didn’t turn into stress or overthinking.
One of the questions that helped me was what I learned from Gaur Gopal Das who says:
In any stressful situation, ask yourself: Can I do something to change this situation?
If yes, then why worry?
If not, then why worry?
These questions and my consciousness helped me to feel pure blessing throughout the day. I felt as if I am the happiest person on this planet.
3. If Not Negative then:
What’s the opposite of negative?
Okay, a little easy question. I believe that the opposite of negativity is tranquility and peace. When there was no place for negativity in my day, the space for growth, opportunity, and peace grew.
Negativity means ‘the limitation’
The opposite of negativity is an opportunity when you use your brain to actually think HOW can I change my life?
For example, I don’t have any writing projects is a dead sentence. But How can I get more writing projects is an alive sentence that opens the door for opportunity.
I felt during those 24 hours that I was more open to opportunities, peace, and positivity. I felt as if everything around me was absolutely great. I felt how blessed I am to have a talent for writing (rather than worrying about projects)
If you are serious about changing your life, take this challenge of not speaking anything negative for 24 hours. This will make you more conscious of the thoughts that enter your mind and the words you use for yourself, your life, and for others. And even if a negative thought tries to get your attention, then repeat this: ‘I am going to speak and think what I want to manifest”
If you take this challenge, don’t forget to share your experience with me.
