It Doesn’t Get Better Nor Do People Heal; An Open Letter to Everyone Who Suffers in Silence

In the past two years, I have read multiple self-help books and after every book, I used to think — there is a solution to every problem that with the right mindset, things do get better, and that if you change your perspective, you can see light at the end of the tunnel. I used to think that people who give up on life don’t understand the ‘blessings of the world’ and they simply are cowards. And maybe if they could read a good nonfiction book, say ‘Attitude Is Everything’, then they will learn to view the world beautifully.

But then I started reading more fiction books and something changed in me as if I was introduced to the most vulnerable side of ‘humans’ which isn’t pretty. I got to read, imagine, and feel why some people simply exist and don’t try to live a better life. I got to know that ‘living’ is a luxury and some people don’t live. Some people fight for death.

I read ‘Me Before You’ a year back and when I read that the main character, Will wanted to die because he is disabled and he cannot even move his head without feeling pain in his neck, I thought, at least he should be grateful for the luxury he has around him. At least he should be grateful that the same accident that put him in a wheelchair didn’t kill him. He should be grateful that he is alive.
