Why I Don’t Trust Social Media Influencers (Even When I am One) & Why You Should Be More Mindful
There are some tags that you get by default like your last name, your religion, and a lot more like that. One of the tags that define me is INFLUENCER and honestly speaking, that’s the last thing I want to be tagged and remembered as.
Now, you must be thinking WHY?
I have more than 50,000 followers on Instagram and I bet people out there are going crazy to have that number. Truth be told, I am more than grateful for the people who follow me on Instagram and Medium because you made me believe that I exist and my opinions matter.
However, I personally don’t appreciate how this whole social media influencer thing is spreading around in the world.
The question again is WHY?
Well, I believe that more than half of the social media influencers are scammers. Yes, you heard that right.
Now, I am not going to point a finger at anyone specifically but there are a few things that I noticed in the past few months that are blowing my mind away and I want you to be aware of how you use social media.
Having said that, I acknowledge that there are some really authentic, genuine, and great influencers out there too (though lesser in quantity) and by no means, do I mean to accuse the entire ‘social media influencer’ community.
Now, let’s get back to where we were — how social media influencers are scamming you. Ready?
1. Manipulation of Data:
There is a concept called Fear of Missing Out and I am sure you must have heard about this concept earlier as well. Now, social media influencers use this concept in a very strategic way. Let me show a simple example of HOW.
Lately, every influencer is talking about how 85 million jobs will be replaced by machines with AI by the year 2025. But did anyone tell you that the report states that 97 million new jobs will be created by 2025 due to AI?
They don’t show you the positive side because if they do, you won’t feel scared and if you don’t feel scared, you will not buy what they have to sell.
In short, they create a fear in your mind that what you are currently doing is useless and if you want to make more money and have a secured future then, here, buy our course on XYZ skill so that you become irreplaceable.
And that’s how you fall for the trap every time. Now, this data was just an example, there are plenty of other ways that influencers use these days to first scare the hell out of you and then rob you.
Honestly, there is nothing wrong with selling any course or promoting any brand but it is certainly wrong to manipulate and hide the data and it’s even more wrong to promote something that you don’t use yourself.
I am not saying that AI isn’t going to make some people unemployed nor I am saying you should be all chill and not worry about upskilling. But I am definitely saying that before trusting any data online, use your BRAIN. You have been blessed with a brain and thinking capability for a reason so use it well instead of letting someone else control it.
2. Fake Advice:
Okay, this is one of the things that forced me to write this blog. I am really scared to write this blog because oh my god! I don’t want to be the person who spreads negativity nor do I want to be attacked but then I never fear expressing what I feel so I am going to say it anyway.
There are some YouTubers and Instagram influencers who constantly jump on to share some techniques or advice like how to become a millionaire or 5 must-read books to become rich or 3 podcasts that will make you rich and the like.
Now, my problem is not that you are coming forward to share good things with the world but my problem is how can you talk about something that you don’t understand.
For example; Influencers who share advice to become millionaires make me question, How can you give advice on becoming a millionaire if you are not one, and if you know something that can make you a millionaire then why don’t go and become one?
Another example would be if let’s say YouTuber Ali Abdal read a book on personal finance and that book shares 5 principles of becoming rich. Now, as Ali is already a millionaire, he can analyze those 5 principles carefully and then may come to a conclusion that three principles in this book don’t make sense, and the 2 are really worth sharing. So, now he is eligible to make a video on those 2 principles to become a millionaire.
Because he is already what he is asking you to become. Similarly, if I had read the same book, I wasn’t eligible to claim 5 principles to make you a millionaire because clearly I am not one so I am in no position to judge if those 5 principles make sense or not. Although making a video like 5 principles I learned from Z book would be a good fit for me.
You can find such fake advice everywhere you look. Hence, before trusting any advice or technique you see on social media, ask yourself ‘Does this make sense to me or not?’
For example; I am a girl in her 20s and I write on topics that I have experienced in my life, not on something that I have no idea about. I don’t think I can give you advice on becoming successful because I am not yet but yes I can give you advice on how to take one step every day to achieve what you want because that’s what I do every day.
Instead of watching 5 YouTube videos in a row, watch one video by an expert, someone who has the credibility to speak on a given topic, someone who has achieved what he/she is saying. And then summarize the video in your head and ask yourself, what part of the video made sense and what was just a piece of trash.
This way, you will not let yourself believe everything you see and listen to on social media. Because if you let everything go in your mind without your own evaluation, you will lose your ability to think critically, and you will become a confused person gradually with no clarity whatsoever.
3. Everything Is Half-True:
What you and I see on social media is not completely true. Influencers show what you would like to see. And I am not sorry to say but here you are wrong not influencers.
You see what we choose to let you see. You don’t see the hard work that goes on in the background, you don’t see the mess around the perfect video that you watch, and you don’t see the sick person with tissues all over the place while reading the blog (If you didn’t understand, I am talking about me)
In fact, let’s take my example.
I am working on starting my own YouTube channel and for that, I am trying to make the background so perfect that my focus has shifted from what I am going to speak to how I will look. I want to make the background so perfect that people perceive me well. And guess what? I didn’t even pay attention to it until I started writing this blog.
So, the next time you feel jealous of someone or something you see on social media, remind yourself that ‘I am not seeing the entire picture’
No one, darling, absolutely no one is living a perfect life, no one is perfectly happy with where they are and what they have, Everyone wants something better, bigger and more expensive. You are just made to believe that except for you everyone is happy. Kick that belief out of your mind and live your life imperfectly rather than wishing to live someone else’s life perfectly.
4. Social Pressure:
Another factor that I hate about social media is how pressurized it makes us feel.
I was scrolling Twitter the other day and one person commented on some tweet, ‘I am 20 years old and I already think there is no future, I feel my life is finished because I haven’t achieved anything yet’
That reply made me wonder, ‘What kind of future are we building?’
I mean, this dude is just 20 years old and all the pressure of getting rich and becoming successful that we have spread has made him believe that he is a failure?
To anyone who is reading this, let me say it, it’s okay if you are not rich yet, it’s okay if by definition you are not successful yet and it’s okay if all you did today was to enjoy yourself. It’s not necessary to be a rich successful person as soon as you turn 20. It’s okay if you are taking life slow and it’s okay if you don’t know what you want to do in life. Just remember that our primary goal should be to enjoy life and fulfill our purpose.
Just don’t feel scared, left out, and intimidated by others’ success because as I said, ‘YOU DON’T KNOW THE WHOLE STORY’
I mentioned earlier as well and let me say it again, this blog is not for every influencer but for those who are using their power in the wrong way. I hope after reading this blog, you get your senses back and use your brain before you believe what you see and watch.
Meanwhile, if you want to know how to control your mind, here is my blog that will help you.
